Affirming the Darlington Statement
The Darlington Statement is a joint consensus statement by Australian and Aotearoa/New Zealand intersex organisations and independent advocates. It was developed in Darlington, Sydney in 2017.
The statement sets out priorities and calls by the intersex human rights movement under six headings: a preamble, human rights and legal reform; health and wellbeing; peer support; allies; and education, awareness and employment.
Affirmations may be public or private. Public affirmations are published periodically.
Affirming the Statement is a simple practical way of learning about Intersex human rights and expressing support and solidarity
Affirmation by persons with intersex variations
As someone born with physical or biological sex characteristics that are more diverse than stereotypical definitions for male or female bodies, I affirm my commitment to the Darlington Statement, as developed by intersex organisations and advocates in 2017, which articulates our human rights in Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand.
I urge our allies and supporters to actively acknowledge the distinctiveness of and diversity within the intersex population, and respect the intersex movement, without tokenism, or instrumentalising or co-opting intersex as a means to other ends.
I demand full adoption of the human rights and legal reform, health and wellbeing, peer support, education, awareness and employment objectives of the Statement.
